As part of Neil Young’s ongoing archive project, Johnny’s Island, an album that was recorded in Hawaii in 1982 but never released is coming soon. Young’s archival project is a chance for him to share previously unheard tracks or whole albums like Johnny’s Island (previously titled Island In The Sun).

Neil Young himself has said about the album that, “‘Johnny’s Island’ is a complete album now being prepared for release at NYA, includes a majority of unreleased tracks including ‘Big Pearl,’ ‘Island In The Sun,’ and ‘Love Hotel,’ plus others you may have heard before.. it’s a beautiful record coming to you soon.” This is also the same crew that put together Young’s Trans album.

Johnny’s Island, or then at the time still called Island In The Sun, was actually offered to Geffen Records before Trans. Young said in an interview in 1995 that, “It was a tropical thing all about sailing, ancient civilizations, islands and water,” Young mentioned that a few of the songs intended for this lost album actually ended up on Trans — “Like An Inca,” “Hold On To Your Love,” and “Little Thing Called Love” . This news comes shortly after releasing “Don’t Cry No Tears”  with Crazy Horse from the upcoming album Way Down in the Rust Bucket.

Johnny’s Island will share a number of tracks that have never been heard before. Keep an eye out for when Young finally releases it, as he hasn’t shared a release date yet, but it’s just one archival project of the many that Young has planned for 2021.
